Parent Awareness Committee

The Parent Awareness Committee is a volunteer parent group that works to identify and develop networking and information resource to help Brophy parents and students make informed decisions about school functions, social events and personal lifestyle choices.  The committee focuses on strengthening, supporting and sharing skills with parents as they navigate through their sons’ high school years.

Signing the Informed Parents Network Agreement is the beginning step for keeping communication open and encouraging dialogue among parents and teens.  The agreement helps parents join their kids in the battle against underage drinking.  It says that they won’t serve alcohol to students or knowingly permit them to bring alcohol into their home; they will be present and aware during any student gatherings hosted by their child, and they will welcome calls about events planned at their homes.  As parents who sign the agreement, we are coming forward and saying “We are not going to allow drinking or drug use to happen in our home and we don’t want this to happen in your home.”  The idea is not to keep kids from visiting friends, but to spark family and community discussions.

Our theme for this year is, “You’re Not the Only One”, emphasizing the need for the parent community to support each other.  We are planning meetings to coincide with the Friday Night Lights events scheduled in November, February, March and April, (Specific dates are listed below).  Reminders will be announced at Mothers’ Guild meetings and sent out through the Brophy email updates.

The Wonder of Boys:
Here is a prayer written by General Douglas MacArthur for his son. It was taken from the book "The Wonder of Boys"by Michael Gurian, a book which we discussed at a Parent Awareness meeting. I think it is a timely and inspirational prayer for us.

"Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee--and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness and the open mind of true wisdom.

Then I, his parent, will dare to whisper: I have not lived in vain."
