Mothers' Guild News

Dear Brophy Moms:

As hard as it is to believe, our 2008-2009 school year is coming to an end, and so is my term as the Mothers’ Guild President.  My hope for the Guild when I took office last Spring was that we could come together and through our hard work we would make this ground a little more fertile than it was before for the next generation of moms and sons.  I believe we have done that.  Together, we have planted our seeds of growth and throughout this past year have watched as we have seen those seeds grow through the work of many hands as we have toiled and labored watching our goals blossom until now they are in full bloom.  I feel incredibly blessed to have worked with an amazing group of women both on the Board, in our committees and those hundreds of mothers who were so willing to pitch in and help when we needed extra cookies, assistance with our blood drives, help in the attendance office, making telephone calls, and sending out mailings.  You did so without a moment’s hesitation, and for that I am extremely grateful. It has been my privilege and honor to serve all of you over the past 12 months.

My sincere thank you and appreciation to my family and law firm colleagues who have graciously allowed me to have the time this past year to devote to Guild activities.  I could not have done this job without your encouragement and support.  I look forward to continuing to serve the Guild as past President, knowing that the Guild is in very good and capable hands as Lisa Khnanisho takes over as President on May 7.  I also expect to fully envelop Lisa’s theme next year, “Savor the Journey” as Max and Michael enter their Senior year.  Thank you all, for making the journey so far so memorable and thank you for not only growing where you’ve been planted, but blossoming as well.

Sincerely,
Marlene Pontrelli Maerowitz
Brophy Mothers’ Guild President

Thank you for Growing Where You’ve Been Planted
We are so blessed at Brophy to have so many moms with willing hearts and helpful hands. The following is just a partial list of the many parents who gave of their time in April.  We say partial because we know, although not intentional, we have missed some of you who give of your time without us even knowing your names.  Know that we appreciate and thank each of you.

Thank you to Jeni Williams and Michelle Ray for welcoming new moms at the Mothers’ Guild table for registration on April 19, Marci Zimmerman and Ana Newell and their Project Grad committee as they plan a wonderful graduation night for our graduating Brophy and Xavier seniors, and to Lee Ann Fennessy and her daytripper committee for planning a fun Kayak adventure.   Lynda Martin Squatrito continued to do an outstanding job with the planning of our evening Guild meetings and programs. A special thank you to Laurel Underseth for organizing volunteers for the blood drive and Senior Heritage dinner, to Janet Rush and Suzanne Williams for assisting with Student Activities, and Lisa Bridges and Tracy Wilky and their committee for the wonderful breakfast they provided each month for the faculty and staff.  Also, a thank you to Nora Walsh who has tirelessly worked all year as the historian in preparing our Guild scrapbook which she will present on May 7.   Also, thank you to the two people who were responsible for all the communications you received this past year. Cathy Moran, our Publications Chair handled all the information with respect to the Brophy newsletter.  If you are reading this now, it is because of Cathy’s work.  Candy Tree continued to provide all the e-mail communications to you in our weekly e-news, as well as special announcements.  Candy’s son Michael graduates this year, so you will see some changes next year in the communications.

A final thank you to everyone who worked so hard all year to make the Mothers’ Guild events run so smoothly.  We had over 300 volunteers this past year contributing thousands of volunteer hours to the Guild and to the school. By your commitment, we have modeled for our boys the spirit of commitment and service.  Thank you for continuing to “Grow Where You’ve Been Planted!”

The Mothers’ Guild in Full Bloom
A NOTE OF APPRECIATION

Back in May 2008, Marlene Pontrelli Maerowitz, president of the Brophy Mothers Guild, crafted her theme:  “Grow Where You’ve Been Planted”   The seeds for a dynamic and fulfilling year were sown.  Our meetings were always filled with pertinent and timely information as it related to our sons needs and our own personal growth.  We learned a lot about the college process by the informative panel discussion lead by the counseling department; we laughed and were awed by the ever popular “college panel;” we had the opportunity to experience the Summit On Human Dignity, unlike ever before; and we were touched by Adria Renke’s presentation on Ignatian Spirituality.

Over the months, Marlene encouraged us all to participate, share our time, talents, and grow together.  And we did.  To get us there, Marlene has planned and /or attended well over 50 meetings, responded to thousands of e-mails, coordinated and overseen the Guild newsletters and e-news and provided guidance and support to the wonderful committees that make Brophy so special.  Marlene’s calm, effective, consistent leadership led the Guild to achieving a very successful year.   With much admiration and respect, the Brophy Mothers’ Guild extends its gratitude to Marlene for devoting literally thousands of hours to growing the mothers guild into a garden of love, where it functioned with the precision of a Swiss watch and with the utmost professionalism.   The Brophy community is so fortunate to be the beneficiary of the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of a volunteer, working mother, who helped us all grow and make a difference.

Marlene, we look forward to your continued guidance, wisdom and friendship next year in your role as past president.  May your journey continue to blossom and may your path be blessed.

Schmitt Jewelers
A Note of Appreciation

The Brophy Mothers’ Guild extends its sincere appreciation to Schmitt Jewelers for crafting and donating the beautiful necklace, which is traditionally presented to the Guild president at the end of her year of service.  This year the necklace was presented to Marlene Pontrelli Maerowitz.   The necklace, which is a Schmitt Jewelers design, has on it a pendant depicting the Brophy Chapel.  It is not only a beautiful piece of jewelry, but a very meaningful one, as well.  It is a gift that will be cherished forever.  The Schmitt brothers are alumni of Brophy.  We thank them for their continued support and generosity.
